From Colour to Confidence: A Creative Career in Hairdressing
Level 3 Hairdressing
Creativity has always played an important role in this Cut Above Academy graduate’s life. Art was her favourite subject at school, and she loved painting, drawing, and working with colour as a way to express ideas beyond words.
Her first creative outlet was makeup. She spent hours experimenting with eyeshadow, learning through online tutorials, and eventually gaining her makeup certification. While she enjoyed the creative process, she realised makeup alone did not fully fulfil her and began searching for her next step.
A close friend suggested hairdressing, an idea that quickly resonated. Her Nana had taught cosmetology and hairdressing for over 40 years, and the profession felt like a natural blend of creativity, hands-on work, and family connection. She enrolled at Cut Above, finding the programme engaging and rewarding, with opportunities to take part in fashion shows and industry events that helped build confidence and real-world experience.
After completing Level 3 Hairdressing, she joined Ryder Salon in Britomart as a colourist. Nearly three years on, she continues to grow within the salon while completing her HITO assignments and working toward becoming a fully qualified hairdresser.
Alongside her salon work, she has assisted at Zambesi Fashion Week, attended industry talks and workshops, and taken part in regular training sessions in cutting and colour. With strong industry support and a passion for learning, she looks forward to continuing her journey and building a successful career in hairdressing.
