From Cut Above to VIVO: Media Shakari’s Story

Media Shakari is a proud Cut Above Academy graduate who completed her Level 3 Hairdressing qualification in 2023. Now working at VIVO, one of New Zealand’s leading salon brands, Media has turned her passion for creativity and people into a thriving career in the hair industry.

For Media, hairdressing felt like a natural fit from the start. “I’ve always loved being creative and working with people,” she says. “Hairdressing felt like the perfect mix of creativity and helping others feel more confident in themselves.”

One of her favourite parts of studying at Cut Above Academy was working with real clients in the student salon. This hands-on experience helped her build confidence and feel prepared for the realities of the industry before graduating. “It made a huge difference knowing what to expect in a real salon environment,” she explains.

Media credits Cut Above with giving her strong technical skills, practical experience, and the confidence to step straight into salon work. Those foundations helped her secure a role at VIVO, where she now works as part of a professional, high-performing team.
